Last night's game officially marked the return of head coach Martin St-Louis to the Montreal Canadiens' bench as his team faced an NHL powerhouse, the Colorado Avalanche.
Naturally, it was a significant challenge for the Montreal squad. After all, Jared Bednar's men were ranked third in the NHL, notably on a nine-game winning streak.
However, it quickly became clear how much this game meant to the team's players. Eager to secure a victory for their head coach, Martin St-Louis's men played a flawless game, limiting Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen to just one goal.
The first line, consisting of Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky, took just nine seconds to respond to the Avalanche's first goal. Furthermore, their teammates Joel Armia and Alex Newhook combined their efforts to take the lead for the Canadiens.
The defensive squad, led by a top-form David Savard, made sure to hold the fort for the rest of the game. Quebec goalie Samuel Montembeault had a very good game with 27 saves, enjoying his first victory in his last seven starts.
Moreover, Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis was very proud of his team's performance, quickly wrapping up the journalists' questions to go celebrate the victory with his players.
It was a special evening for him, as well as for the rest of the organization. A particularly moving scene took place at the team bench in the seconds following the victory, as Martin St-Louis appeared very happy with the outcome of the game.
After going through a rather difficult period due to the hospitalization of his son Mason, this victory was of enormous importance to the Canadiens' head coach.
