It's no longer a secret to anyone, Jake Allen is on the trade market, and his departure from Montreal depends on one thing: a team that accepts Kent Hughes' terms.
While many observers believe the veteran goalie no longer has any trade value and that no team would be interested in his services, NHL insiders have debunked this notion. Instead, the current market for goalkeepers is generally in a state of status quo.
It has even been learned recently that some teams would inquire about Allen's availability in the summer if he was still available from the CH.
"Allen is regularly on TSN's list of players at risk of being traded. He is a veteran who could be a solid insurance policy for a contending team with a less reliable #2 goalie. Kent Hughes will probably need to retain part of his salary.
Potential buyers: Carolina, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, New Jersey, and Toronto." - Franck Bernard
One of the teams keeping an eye on the 33-year-old goalie is the Carolina Hurricanes, and the popular site Montreal Hockey Now has put forward a very interesting offer.
This is an interesting trade basis for both parties. On one hand, the Canes solve a short-term problem in goal, and on the other, the Canadiens acquire Nick Suzuki's brother, Ryan, who has yet to blossom in the organization that drafted him 28th overall in 2019.
"As for the potential return, Kent Hughes could aim to reunite the Suzuki brothers (as they did with the Xhekaj brothers), and additionally, they would add depth at center.
Kent Hughes seems to like giving a new chance to players drafted in the first round in 2019. It could be the perfect combo." - Franck Bernard
Carolina has depth at the center position, and Suzuki's future there seems very uncertain. He is currently stagnating in the AHL, having scored only 10 points in 24 games, in his third professional season.
It's worth noting that the 22-year-old forward has suffered several injuries over the last few campaigns.
