Since his arrival as the General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes has clearly demonstrated that he would not hesitate to make trades if he had the opportunity to improve his team for the long term.

Moreover, during a recent press conference, the GM of the CH stated that he would like to complete a trade similar to the Kirby Dach one, by bringing in a talented young player who is looking for a new opportunity, in order to continue the rebuilding process started by the organization.
To this end, it should not be forgotten that the Canadiens hold four first-round picks over the next two years. Many observers are convinced that Kent Hughes will try to use some of these selections to bring in immediate reinforcements, given that the team could very well be fighting for a playoff spot as early as next year.

A golden opportunity has presented itself to Kent Hughes?

According to rumors, the fifth overall pick in the 2021 draft, Kent Johnson, is unhappy with his situation in Columbus, as he is apparently not in the good graces of head coach Pascal Vincent.
Indeed, despite an excellent rookie season last year, the former University of Michigan player is struggling to get quality minutes in the top 6, having even been demoted to the American League this season. A completely nonsensical punishment considering that the number 91 of the Blue Jackets has absolutely nothing to prove in the AHL.
The center player, as well as his entourage, have reportedly made it known to the management that they would like a trade to be completed to give him a better opportunity elsewhere.
After all, it's understandable, although the 21-year-old has immense talent, Pascal Vincent benched him last weekend, depriving him of the power play and giving him only seven minutes of playtime.
Statistics of Kent Johnson over the last two years:

· 2022-2023: 16 goals and 24 assists (40 points) in 79 NHL games
· 2023-2024: 5 goals and 10 assists (15 points) in 10 AHL games
· 2023-2024: 6 goals and 10 assists (16 points) in 37 NHL games

When a new General Manager is officially hired in Columbus, should Kent Hughes try everything to get Kent Johnson? Just like Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook, he would undoubtedly be a great project for the Montreal Canadiens. Moreover, at only 21 years old, there is no doubt that his best seasons are ahead of him, and he could literally explode under a head coach like Martin St-Louis.
As you know, Kent Johnson has an exceptional skating ability and simply impressive hands. He would instantly become a prime option to complete the team's top two lines, possessing above-average offensive flair.
Honestly, the idea of adding a player like Johnson is quite attractive, as he is still very young and has very high potential. It remains to be seen if the Blue Jackets are willing to part with him and what the price would be to acquire him.
Would you be willing to include the Flames' and Jets' first-round picks to get Kent Johnson? Personally, I would! We're talking about a player who was selected fifth overall just two years ago!
