Major Trade Looming Between the Canadiens and Sabres for a Former First-Round Pick?
It's a quite clear, straightforward, and precise theme for the Montreal Canadiens, as Kent Hughes aims to acquire players with great potential, aged 22-23, who are establishing themselves in the NHL. Players on the verge of blooming and overlooked by their organizations.
Hughes even seems to have a soft spot for players drafted in 2019.
We saw it with Kirby Dach, we saw it with Alex Newhook, and rest assured that the CH will almost certainly close another deal of this kind by next September.
So, the question is: who will be the next Alex Newhook?
Last season, everyone was waiting for Pierre-Luc Dubois, and we got Newhook.
This season, everyone is waiting for Trevor Zegras, so could we have... Peyton Krebs?
This is what Simon "Snake" Boisvert just suggested.
Peyton Krebs traded to the Montreal Canadiens?
As just reported by Marco Normandin, the analyst and professional scout made an interesting suggestion for Kent Hughes on BPM Sports.
We know the Sabres have really several good young forwards, and Krebs could absolutely be available there. They can't keep them all.
Krebs never had a real opportunity in Buffalo.
He was drafted 17th overall in 2019, right after Alex Newhook, but he was expected to go much earlier.
Many experts saw him at the time as one of the top 10 players in his draft, but he had just suffered a major knee injury, which scared some clubs.
Acquired in the Jack Eichel trade, Krebs could be a steal.
"I really like Peyton Krebs. I see him fitting very well in a middle lineup to create plays and then add intensity and energy to the Canadiens. In my opinion, he certainly wouldn't cost much because eventually, Buffalo will have to make choices. They have a lot of young forwards, and they can't keep them all. In my opinion, Krebs will be the guy they'll have to let go of, and if I were the Canadiens, I'd reach out."
- Simon "Snake" Boisvert
Krebs, 23 years old, has accumulated 60 points (19 goals) in 191 career NHL games. In the AHL, he hasn't played since 2021, but we're talking about 30 points in 25 games, which is very solid.
He would probably cost less to acquire than Newhook, too!
