The Columbus Blue Jackets are having a tough time. They have lost the services of a star player following the tragic death of Johnny Gaudreau.

Additionally, as you know, they previously traded the forward Patrik Laine to the Canadiens.
With these two significant salaries off their books, the Jackets currently find themselves below the minimum salary cap floor.
According to insider reports, Commissioner Gary Bettman might consider making an exception and allow the Blue Jackets to start the season even if they don't meet the salary floor.
They are currently 2.7 million dollars below the usual requirement. This is not the first time such exceptions have been made in professional sports.
«The NBA often grants exceptions in similar situations, such as the injured player exception, which allows teams to replace players who are out for the season due to serious injury or death.

Given the unique and tragic nature of this situation, the NHL should consider a similar exemption for the Blue Jackets, at least for the 2024-2025 season.» - The Hockey News
