Jonathan Marchessault and the Canadiens: massive update
Significant news has emerged regarding Jonathan Marchessault, who reportedly wants to play in Montreal and seems interested in signing with the Canadiens, according to Marc-Oliver Beaudoin on X.
He mentions on this matter:
« I'm not saying it's going to happen because VGK could well do some salary cap gymnastics and make him an interesting offer to stay in Vegas, but I know for sure that Marchessault is open to the idea of playing in MTL, one day! » - Marc-Oliver Beaudoin
The goal here is not to doubt this statement, but rather to put things into perspective.
First, let's go back in time and recall the following names: Daniel Brière and Martin Lapointe, to name just a few. Indeed, these two Quebec players, at the peak of their respective careers, stated at that time in their careers that they were interested in playing in Montreal. Rumors were flying from all sides. Brière in 2007 and Martin Lapointe, twice rather than once, in 2001, and later in 2005.
Brière would eventually play in Montreal, at the very end of his career. A stint that did not go very well, as we remember, with his tense relationship with head coach Michel Therrien.
Moreover, while Brière had signed with the Flyers, they came and eliminated the CH in the first round on May 3, 2008, at the Bell Centre. Nothing to improve matters.
Martin Lapointe, for his part, would sign with the Boston Bruins in 2001 and repeat the feat in 2005 with the Chicago Blackhawks. He finally signed in Montreal... as director of player development in 2012.
What these two players have in common with Jonathan Marchessault is that these two players also loudly claimed they were interested in coming to Montreal, on the verge of their free agency.
Many mentioned at the time that they were using strategy to increase offers, while others mentioned that it was a matter of pressure.
Regardless, both players always mentioned being interested in signing in Montreal while they were at their best, to ultimately snub the Canadiens and the organization and sign elsewhere.
So, when we hear that Jonathan Marchessault is open to the idea of playing in Montreal, it can be said that there's a long way from the cup to the lips.
Not to forget that on the CH side, the salary cap space is likely to be quite tight. Would Marchessault agree to sign for less to come play in Montreal? One can really doubt it. The trend is rather to increase the bids.
Sometimes a player signs for less to stay with a team that aspires to great honors, or to stay with players with whom he has great affinities. However, signing for less with a new team, for no particular reason, is quite rare, not to say that it has never been seen...
