Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson impressed during the last two games of the previous season after signing his entry-level contract.

However, despite this promising start, it is likely that he will begin the 2024-25 season in the American Hockey League (AHL) rather than in the NHL, according to journalist Ryan Szporer from The Hockey Writers.
This decision is motivated by the need to manage his development and avoid unnecessary risks.
Although Hutson's potential is widely recognized, comparisons with Sean Farrell, who had a similar experience, highlight the challenge of transitioning from college hockey to the NHL. The Canadiens are cautious and do not want to keep Hutson only as a power-play specialist or as a seventh defenseman.
With a defensive lineup already crowded, including players like Mike Matheson and Kaiden Guhle, it is more practical to let Hutson continue developing in the AHL before fully committing him to the NHL, according to Szporer.
