The Montreal Canadiens might soon make a major acquisition by drafting the next Alex DeBrincat in the upcoming NHL draft.

Indeed, history could repeat itself for a 2024 Quebec prospect of small stature who may slip to the second or third round, despite high-level offensive talent.
Justin Poirier, one of the youngest players in the next draft class, was just 11 days away from being eligible for next year's cohort. This detail highlights the potential for development in his case.
This 5-foot-8 sniper, already close to 185 pounds, is attracting attention for his ability to score a ton of goals.
After finishing the season with 51 goals and 82 points in 68 games, Poirier is even hotter in the playoffs, amassing 10 goals and 14 points in just eight games.
«Justin Poirier of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, who dropped 9 spots from January on the NHL's recruitment list, just added two goals to his record tonight in Bathurst.

Counting the season and playoffs, that's 61 goals in 76 games!» - Stéphane Leroux

What's extremely fascinating in his case is that despite his elite scoring ability, he ranks as far down as 82nd among North American skaters on the NHL Central Scouting's amateur list.
This was somewhat the scenario for DeBrincat in 2016, who slipped to the second round despite an exceptional season of 51 goals and 101 points in 60 games, due to his size.
However, it should be noted that Poirier differs from DeBrincat, or even a Cole Caufield: he has a dose of «grit» in his play style that is very interesting.
Additionally, he weighs about twenty pounds more than both NHL players, even though he is only 17 years old.
With a late second-round pick, the Canadiens could potentially hit a home run with the acquisition of Poirier.
