While Samuel Montembeault now seems to have secured the position of the number one goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens, having recently signed a three-year contract extension, only time will tell if the Quebec native can establish himself as a leading goalie in the NHL.

Given that Montembeault is 27 years old, Canadiens General Manager Kent Hughes must think about the future of the organization by adding young, talented goaltenders who could one day take over the number 35's spot. This is one of the reasons why the CH's management selected three goalies in the last draft: Jacob Fowler, Yevgeni Volokhin, and Quentin Miller.
While 19-year-old American goalie Jacob Fowler is currently making headlines, representing the United States at the World Junior Championship, Russian goalie Yevgeni Volokhin is receiving less media attention. However, Volokhin has been dominating with Mamonty Yugry since the start of the season.
Playing in the MHL, the equivalent of junior ranks in Canada, the Canadiens' fifth-round pick in 2022 has compiled an impressive record of 13 wins, 2 losses, and 4 overtime defeats, helping his team accumulate an incredible 30 points out of a possible 38.
Moreover, Yevgeni Volokhin has posted exceptional stats with a league-leading goals-against average of 1.47. He also has a very high save percentage of 0.942, ranking him third in the entire MHL. It's quite spectacular for an 18-year-old goalie.
It is hoped that he will continue his progression and eventually become an important asset for Kent Hughes and the Canadiens. Certainly, the 6'3" goalie has a lot of talent and could potentially surprise and become a key member of Martin St-Louis' lineup.
It will be very interesting to follow his development over the next few years. It's likely that he could make the jump to the KHL as early as next season, as several teams were interested in offering him a contract before the current campaign began.
