Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes is considering a trade involving a young defenseman.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet indicated that the team is ready to trade a defenseman, a decision that might be necessary soon.
Arber Xhekaj and Justin Barron, recently signed, can no longer be sent to the Laval Rocket without passing through NHL waivers, meaning they will stay in Montreal.
With seven defensemen already under contract, including Kaiden Guhle, Mike Matheson, David Savard, Jayden Struble, and Jordan Harris, and young talents like Lane Hutson, David Reinbacher, and Logan Mailloux waiting, the situation is complex.
Hughes must avoid losing promising players through waivers, as demonstrated with Cayden Primeau last year when the team almost lost him for nothing.
A trade could be finalized before the start of the season to free up space and allow young talents to join the main team.
