A 27-year-old player's announcement has surprised many hockey fans and observers around the globe.

Former Canadiens goaltender Michael McNiven has decided to hang up his skates and retire from hockey at just 27 years old.
The netminder played one game with the Canadiens during the 2021-2022 season. He was in net for one period in the NHL, marking his only career appearance in the Bettman circuit.
McNiven spent a significant amount of time in the Canadiens' minor league affiliates.
He spent the past season in Gap, in the Ligue Magnus, in France.
It seemed like he had seen it all. Michael McNiven has decided to switch to coaching and will become an assistant coach for a BCHL team.
A new beginning for someone who was once considered a top prospect for the Canadiens when he was signed after his junior career.
