Recently, the General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, made an appearance on the podcast "Got Yer Back," hosted by Pierre LeBrun.
During the session, Hughes opened up on several significant topics related to the Canadiens, including the notable trade he completed with the Winnipeg Jets for Sean Monahan.
Hughes confessed he was very pleased with the return he got for his center player but was exceedingly apprehensive about breaking the news to his head coach, Martin St-Louis.
Indeed, Hughes shared a rather entertaining moment, revealing his relief at being able to deliver the news over the phone rather than in person.
Pierre Lebrun to Kent Hughes: "How did the conversation with Martin St-Louis go after the Sean Monahan trade?"
Kent Hughes: "Fortunately, it was over the phone!" - Via HFTV
It's fair to say that this might not have been the easiest call for our GM!
He mentioned that being able to communicate via phone spared him from having to face St-Louis's expressions and body language, as the coach was clearly not pleased about losing a key player like Sean Monahan.
According to Hughes, the call was brief.
Although he shared this information humorously, it's evident that the head coach was significantly disappointed by the necessity to part with his veteran.
After all, his goal is to win games, and the departure of Sean Monahan, who had scored 13 goals and 22 assists (35 points) in 49 games, undoubtedly complicates matters.
Ultimately, Hughes admitted that Martin St-Louis, despite his disappointment, understood the trade and recognized that the management made this exchange with the intention of improving the team in the long term.
