With the contracts for restricted free agents settled, Kent Hughes, the Canadiens' GM, is preparing to leverage the salary cap space, notably by utilizing the long-term injured reserve list.
According to an NHL source reported by Marco D'Amico from Responsible Gambling, Montreal is in an advantageous position thanks to owner Geoff Molson, who is willing to exceed the cap if necessary.
Currently, the Canadiens have $5.5 million available, but placing Carey Price's $10.5 million contract on the injured reserve could provide even more flexibility.
Hughes could thus take advantage of teams constrained by the salary cap, such as the New York Islanders and the Edmonton Oilers, while avoiding long-term risks.
