Jeff Gorton shocks many with comments on free agency

Just before the end-of-season review, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton made the wise decision to exercise the option in head coach Martin St-Louis's contract, ensuring his services for the next three years.
Every good organization seeks stability, and that's what they've achieved by offering this contract extension. Indeed, there will be consistency behind the bench of the Montreal Canadiens for at least three more seasons with Martin St-Louis, unless a potential firing occurs, as is often the case in the NHL.
Moreover, the executive vice president of hockey operations at the Tricolore, Jeff Gorton, seems more open to the idea of adding a player via free agency. Although the Montreal brass appeared very conservative on this front recently, it remains essential to be open to all possible options to improve the team.
Since arriving in Montreal, he has not been very keen on free agents. It is understood that if we are at the beginning of a rebuild, this avenue might not be the best idea to follow the process previously started by the senior management.
However, when one sees a slightly more promising future, the option of acquiring a quality free agent on July 1st becomes increasingly interesting, at least in theory. One should never say, "Fountain, I will not drink from your water." That's why Jeff Gorton made the following statement:
« If there is a free agent available, a great player, who could really help us, we will be attentive. »
Jeff Gorton is now at the stage: If a free agent can help us, we will be attentive. And that's the right attitude. This approach allowed him to sign a certain Artemi Panarin during his time with the Rangers, a signing that completely changed the trajectory of the New York organization.
After all, we're talking about a forward who produced at a rate of 120 points this season, good for the 4th place among NHL leaders. We haven't seen that in Montreal for ages. If such an opportunity presents itself, which is quite rare, let's hope that Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes will not only be attentive but also very aggressive in this matter.
