Trade between the Canadiens and Oilers: an absolute robbery
Sometimes simple trades can turn into strokes of genius, and that's exactly what happened for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens in 2022.
Just a few weeks after his appointment as GM of the Tricolore, Hughes sent veteran Brett Kulak to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a late 2nd round pick in 2022, a 7th round pick in 2024, and William Lagesson.
Today, it's the second-round selection that's particularly noteworthy, as it turned out to be the highly promising Lane Hutson a few months later, during the same draft that brought Juraj Slafkovsky to the team.
« It's been a long time since the arrival of a young Canadiens prospect has excited fans as much as Lane Hutson. And if the dynamic defenseman is wearing the colors of the Tricolore today, it's thanks to... Brett Kulak! » - TVA Sports
Less than two years later, the 62nd pick of that draft has already made his NHL debut, and it's safe to say that his performances are quite exciting for the future of the Canadiens.
After dominating the collegiate ranks with a tally of 97 points, including 30 goals, in 77 games, Hutson also recorded his first two NHL points during his first two games in Montreal.
His offensive play, passing skills, and game intelligence already prove that he is destined for a very promising career in the NHL.
A big summer now awaits him so that he can develop his physical strength and add a few pounds of muscle to his frame, which would help him secure his spot in Montreal for the next season even more.
If he's already impressive at just 20 years old, I can't imagine what he'll become in two or three years, with greater physical maturity and several games of experience under his belt.
