The last two games of the regular season allowed fans of the Montreal Canadiens to see two very promising prospects in action, namely Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux.
Both young players clearly did not disappoint, meeting the high expectations placed on them. Indeed, the former Boston University defenseman showcased the full extent of his offensive abilities by performing spectacular maneuvers in enemy territory, notably earning two assists in two games.
As for Logan Mailloux, after an excellent year in the American League, number 94 has shown that he is ready to establish himself permanently in the NHL. In addition to earning an assist in his first game with the Tricolore, the 31st overall pick in 2021 managed to stand out in the defensive zone, proving that he had made significant adjustments to his style of play.
However, regarding the second-round pick in 2022, his confidence on the ice impressed many observers, so much so that his place in Martin St-Louis' lineup is potentially already confirmed for the 2024-2025 campaign.
Yet, just a few weeks ago, everyone expected Lane Hutson to start the season with the Laval Rocket next year, just like Logan Mailloux this year. However, in just two games, number 48 has dispelled some journalists' doubts by proving that, despite his small size, he has the talent necessary to be a key element in Montreal's defensive brigade.
« It's very exciting to see Lane Hutson in action. I thought we'd see him in Laval next season, at least at the start, but now I'm becoming less convinced. The guy is overflowing with talent! » - Anthony Marcotte
Indeed, his skating and the way he uses his stick allow him to easily recover pucks along the boards, an aspect of the game that frightened many fans. Additionally, his vision of the game and puck handling are exceptional, already surpassing all the team's defenders in these two categories.
Furthermore, in the latest episode of the "Process" podcast, Simon Boisvert seemed to confirm this information, indicating that, in his view, Lane Hutson will be the fourth defenseman in the team hierarchy when the next season begins.
This means that the chances of seeing the small defenseman being relegated to the American League in 2024-2025 are quite slim. All signs point to Lane Hutson being in uniform for the Montreal Canadiens' opening match.
