During their California trip, the Montreal Canadiens have shown a recurring trend. For a second consecutive game, head coach Martin St-Louis sent a serious message to some of his players.

Just like against the Ducks on Wednesday night, forwards Jesse Ylonen and Michael Pezzetta were benched, not seeing any ice time in the third period against the Sharks. It's surprising to see the head coach punishing these two players, especially since he has repeatedly expressed his trust in his fourth line.
"Martin St-Louis often says how much he trusts his fourth line. For a second straight game, he benches Ylönen and Pezzetta in the third period. Pearson and Anderson are also skipping shifts." - Simon-Olivier Lorange

Moreover, Martin St-Louis did not hesitate to target two veterans of the team, Tanner Pearson and Josh Anderson, who are clearly not playing up to expectations.
After a great start to the season, the former Vancouver Canuck has only managed two assists in his last fourteen games, with a concerning -6 differential. As for Anderson, nothing seems to be working for him right now. Despite opportunities to play in the top two lines and on the power play, Josh Anderson has only a meager total of two points in 20 games.
It's evident that these statistics are not befitting a player with an annual salary of $5.5 million!
However, it's heartening to see that the head coach is finally giving ice time to the most deserving players, thereby sending a strong message to those who are not producing. Martin St-Louis has tried everything to help Josh Anderson regain his offensive touch, but the forward seems simply unable to contribute offensively.
It's also worth noting that Josh Anderson did not take the ice at all during the overtime period.
