Over the past few days, we learned that Quebec defenseman Samuel Girard left the Colorado Avalanche for personal reasons.

Moreover, the reason leading to this decision has just been revealed as the defenseman officially announced that he will enter the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program. Samuel Girard notably released a very touching statement, mentioning that he needed to take time for himself to take care of his mental health.
Here is the statement in question:
"I have made the proactive decision to take care of my mental health and will begin treatment for severe anxiety and depression, which have been untreated for too long and have led to alcohol abuse. Taking care of one's mental health is of utmost importance, and I encourage everyone to talk about it and seek help if you feel the need. I would like to express my gratitude to my wife, friends, the Colorado Avalanche, my teammates, and the fans for their patience, understanding, and ongoing support." - Samuel Girard

Wow! Honestly, we want to congratulate him for breaking the silence and being able to admit that he needed help!
This is a first step in the right direction, and we are all convinced that he will be able to treat this illness with the help of professionals and thus come back stronger. Certainly, it's an excellent demonstration of courage, and we are immensely proud of him!
We wish him the best for the future.
