Controversy Emerging Between Cole Caufield and Martin St. Louis: There May Be Some Trouble in Paradise for the Beloved Coach/Player Duo
During his latest press conference, Martin St-Louis was asked about Cole Caufield and his struggle to find the back of the net this season.
So far, he has only scored seven goals in 29 games, which is the worst goal-scoring pace of his three seasons in the NHL to date.
Although there is still a lot of hockey left to play in this campaign, this significant decrease in goal production is worrying fans, especially since he is paid a substantial salary to score goals.
Regarding this situation, the head coach's response did not reassure fans. In fact, it even created some controversy. Here is the coach's response:
Essentially, St-Louis mentioned that he is not focusing on Caufield to score goals, but rather on him becoming a complete player in all aspects of the game, notably in his defensive play.
However, this response has been seriously questioned on social networks, and debates have ensued.
"So. Caufield is not on fire.
I'm really glad that Caufield is improving his defensive game. But is this what will make him an effective scorer? Suzuki can do the defensive work. Can we let our only pure scorer focus on scoring goals in the next games?" - HFTV
As many have pointed out, even if the sharpshooter has improved in his defensive game, he is paid to score goals, not to become a good 200-foot player.
Kent Hughes gave him the team's second-largest contract (excluding Carey Price's) to score goals regularly, something he is not doing now.
"Again, a bit like with Xhekaj, I think focusing on weaknesses instead of first improving their strengths makes these players forget what made them good in the first place." - HFTV
It must be said that we are a bit torn by both arguments.
It's true that playing a more complete game could offer Cole more chances to score goals. However, this should not be done at the expense of his offensive production, and currently, that's exactly what's happening.
Honestly, I believe this is a very important season in Caufield's development. He is learning the hard way to play a more complete style, but I believe his current offensive struggles are a necessary evil for him to become the best player possible in the long term.
