Massive Development for Jake Allen: He is Officially Back in the Running to Solve the Goalie Issue in Edmonton
The ongoing situation with the three goaltenders in the Montreal Canadiens organization is generating a lot of discussions, especially in recent days as the Edmonton Oilers are desperately looking for a new goalie to back up Stuart Skinner.
Well-connected hockey experts like Darren Dreger, Elliotte Friedman, and Pierre LeBrun have repeatedly mentioned that Ken Holland, the General Manager of the Oilers, is very interested in the Montreal goaltenders. Some have even suggested that Kent Hughes and his counterpart are already in advanced discussions to complete a trade.
However, the question arises: Which of Jake Allen, Samuel Montembeault, or Cayden Primeau might soon leave the organization?
During the podcast "The Sick Podcast With Tony Marinaro", Craig Button made a significant statement regarding the goalie potentially targeted by the Oilers. According to him, the best option would undoubtedly be to acquire veteran Jake Allen, who has a wealth of NHL experience and has already won a Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues.
"Who can help Stuart Skinner? I've been saying this from the beginning, I think Jake Allen would be the best goaltender to help the Oilers. Obviously, he has a no-trade clause in his contract and he can use it, but in terms of Edmonton's immediate needs, I think Jake Allen would be the ideal goaltender. I've read names of players who could join the Oilers, and if I'm Ken Holland, I don't want any of them. The only one I would want is Jake Allen." - Craig Button
Considering the Oilers' aspiration for top honors this season, Jake Allen becomes a very interesting choice. Although Cayden Primeau has appealing potential, the 24-year-old has not yet established himself as a solid NHL goaltender. As for Samuel Montembeault, his contractual situation could pose a problem, as he will become a free agent at the end of this season.
Allen, on the other hand, is under contract until 2024-2025 and has clearly demonstrated since the start of the season that he can undoubtedly help a team in net. A tandem of Stuart Skinner and Jake Allen could potentially help the Edmonton Oilers find their winning ways and qualify for the playoffs.
Furthermore, a trade involving the 33-year-old goalie would make sense in terms of the Canadiens' rebuilding process. Although Jake Allen is currently in the organization's plans, it would be very surprising if the Canadiens offered him a contract extension at the end of his current deal. Kent Hughes must take advantage of this opportunity to obtain an attractive return while Allen still holds significant trade market value.
