According to several observers, the contract negotiations involving Samuel Montembeault's agent and Kent Hughes, the General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens, will play a crucial role in the GM's decision regarding the significant goaltender situation.

Although it seems inevitable that a trade will occur soon, fans are still wondering which goalie will be let go by the organization. If Kent Hughes is unable to reach an agreement with the Quebec-born goaltender, it wouldn't be surprising to see Montembeault traded soon. However, if Montembeault signs a contract extension, Hughes will have to decide whether to trade veteran Jake Allen or the younger Cayden Primeau.
Recently, Réjean Tremblay confirmed key information during his weekly column on BPM Sports. According to his sources, Montembeault's salary demands are around four million dollars per season.
Wow! That's interesting!
Now, it remains to be seen if the Montreal management truly believes that Samuel Montembeault can become a bona fide number one goalie in the NHL. If not, it would be surprising if Kent Hughes agrees to such a high salary over several seasons, especially since Montembeault would be earning more than his teammate Jake Allen.
If you were in the position of the Canadiens' GM, would you contract the 27-year-old goaltender for four million dollars per season, or would you trade him by the trade deadline?
"But the real question is much more crucial. Do Jeff Gordon and Kent Hughes believe that Samuel Montembeault can be a number one? As simple as that. And if they think otherwise, then expect Montembeault to be traded in the coming months." - Réjean Tremblay

Given that many experts have talked about a three-year contract extension, it would be a 12 million dollar deal. That's a lot of money for a goaltender who has not yet established himself as a starting goalie in the NHL.
Since his entry into the NHL, the goalie from Saint-Gertrude has a record of 37 wins, 48 losses, and 13 overtime defeats. He also has a goals-against average of 3.43 and a save percentage of 0.897. Unfortunately, these are not statistics befitting a top-tier goaltender.
Certainly, Kent Hughes has a significant decision to make in this matter, and it will greatly impact the goalie who will be traded soon.
