With the trade deadline just days away, there's a lot of activity happening in every corner of the NHL, and in Montreal, David Savard's situation is generating a lot of buzz.
Some observers, fans, and experts want to see the Canadiens keep the defenseman, while others believe it's crucial to capitalize on the interest from other league teams to trade him for a high price.
Kent Hughes has openly mentioned that he is not shopping the Quebecer around, but he also stated that he is always listening to potential offers. According to numerous journalists, the GM of the Canadiens has a price in mind, and if he doesn't receive that price, he won't pull the trigger.
Kent Hughes' asking price is revealed
Now, everyone is wondering what the price Hughes is looking to get for Savard. Well, we finally have an answer thanks to renowned insider Pierre LeBrun.
"According to Pierre LeBrun, Montreal will not part with Savard unless they receive:
- a 1st round pick
OR
- a young player equivalent to a 1st round pick
OR
- picks of equivalent value to a 1st round pick"
So, to agree to trade Savard, the Canadiens absolutely need to receive a first-round pick, or its equivalent in value, in return.
Honestly, given that a player like Sean Monahan was able to fetch that value, considering the fact that the 33-year-old defenseman has another year on his contract with a very good salary, I would be really surprised if Hughes doesn't receive any concrete offers including that famous first-round pick.
One thing is certain, the general manager's phone is likely to ring quite a bit in the coming days, and it will be interesting to see if he ends up deciding to sacrifice Savard's presence and everything he brings to the young core of the team by March 8th.
