Trevor Zegras and the Montreal Canadiens: he has broken the silence
The name of the polarizing forward Trevor Zegras has been circulating in Montreal for a while now, especially since the Canadiens aim to make a significant move on the trade market and he might be available from Anaheim.
Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton stated in their end-of-season review that they want to attempt another "Kirby Dach type" transaction to add a top 6 forward, and the number 11 from the Ducks is a potential target.
Numerous rumors about the possibility of Zegras being available, particularly since the recent acquisition of promising prospect Cutter Gauthier, fuel speculation about his departure during the offseason.
These rumors have made so much noise that Zegras himself has been affected by them. Zegras told Eric Stephens of The Athletic that this situation was difficult.
"We see them. It's hard not to see them. It really sucks." - Trevor Zegras
Zegras had a very tough last year. After tumultuous negotiations for his contract extension, which lasted until the last minute before the season started, he suffered injuries that limited his campaign to only 31 games.
And among these games, the ninth overall pick of 2019 was limited offensively with a meager tally of six goals and 15 points, a performance significantly lower than his previous two seasons of over 60 points each.
We also learn in the Stephens interview that the Canadiens are the team most present in the trade rumors, having expressed interest in his services during the season.
He adds that the rumors sending him to Montreal and elsewhere suck (meaning it's crap and he has to deal with it) and that he can only control what he can control. He will not say otherwise as long as he is in Anaheim unless he wants to publicly request a trade. - via DLC
Recall that informant Pierre LeBrun had also revealed that the Canadiens were one of the teams that had inquired about Zegras.
It will be interesting to see if the rumors between the CH and Zegras pick up again as the draft approaches.
One thing is certain, Kent Hughes will not empty his club just to acquire this famous top 6 forward, as we saw last year in the Pierre-Luc Dubois case.
