Kent Hughes played his cards right with the signing of Sean Monahan for less than $2 million this summer.

After 11 games, the 29-year-old center has accumulated six goals and 10 points, even surpassing Cole Caufield as the team's top scorer with two more goals.
In short, his services are very valuable to the Canadiens at the moment, and his impressive performances this season have greatly increased his trade market value, as well as the figures for his next contract extension.
In an ideal world, Hughes manages to extend Monahan on terms favorable to the Canadiens. However, due to his excellent performance, this could become a serious challenge. Because of this, it's not out of the question that the GM may have to move him at the deadline if he can't retain him without jeopardizing the long-term plan of the management.
Should he stay healthy and the CH is out of the playoff picture, one of the teams that would have Monahan in their sights could be the Boston Bruins, according to journalist Rob Couch.
Don Sweeney will surely give a call to his counterpart in Montreal to acquire a versatile center like number 91 of the Canadiens. It's currently the most important need for Boston if the team wishes to aim for a championship this year. He would be an ideal replacement for Patrice Bergeron.
However, to counter-argue Rob Couch, I don't believe the Bruins have the necessary tools to tip the scales in a trade. It's rare to see a trade between two rival teams and given that they don't have a first-round pick in 2024, I doubt Hughes would trade Monahan there if he decides to do so.
Truthfully, I hope the Canadiens' GM can agree on the terms of an honest contract for Sean, but limiting the risks for the Canadiens. A three-year deal at $3.5 or $4 million per season, for example, but it all depends on his willingness to stay in Montreal.
