There's no doubt that the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, will have to act swiftly to address the pressing goaltender situation. As time progresses, it seems there are only two viable options for the Habs' management: either trade a goaltender or place Cayden Primeau on waivers, hoping he isn't claimed.
Many observers anticipate that the 24-year-old American goaltender will be the one sacrificed by the organization in the near future. Evidently behind Jake Allen and Samuel Montembeault in the team's pecking order, Cayden Primeau has only started one game this season, losing 5-2 to the formidable New Jersey Devils.
However, during his appearance on TSN last night, Darren Dreger surprised many fans by suggesting that the Canadiens could potentially part ways with either Jake Allen or Samuel Montembeault. He pointed out that Kent Hughes might inevitably get a more appealing return by trading a goalie already established in the NHL.
After all, several teams are currently in search of a backup goaltender. There's no doubt that adding Jake Allen or Samuel Montembeault, both of whom have significantly more experience than the young Cayden Primeau, would be much more attractive to potential suitors.
Furthermore, knowing that NHL teams tend to utilize their backup goalies more frequently, both Monty and Allen would be prime options for teams aiming for the playoffs. There could be immense interest throughout the league if Kent Hughes decides to put them on the trading block.
