As we mentioned in recent days, another issue besides goaltending could require special attention from Kent Hughes in the coming months.

Indeed, veteran Sean Monahan is, according to many observers, the best forward of the team since the start of the season. However, the Montreal Canadiens' number 91 will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2023-2024 season, forcing the management to make a crucial decision regarding his future with the organization.
Will the general manager of the Canadiens wish to capitalize more significantly on the trade made with the Flames by trading Monahan?
Would he prefer to offer him a contract extension to keep him with the team?
We should have a better idea of Kent Hughes' plan by the trade deadline. However, one thing is certain, Sean Monahan could bring a very interesting return to the Tricolore. Montreal Canadiens beat writer Arpon Basu suggested that the Canadiens could acquire a first-round pick by making such a trade.
He also added this:
"Monahan will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He is 29 years old. His importance to the Canadiens only increases his value as the trade deadline approaches, not to mention that of Pearson.

While it may be tempting for the Canadiens to consider keeping Monahan beyond this season, having such a valuable asset at this stage of the rebuild is a gift that the Canadiens must accept." - Arpon Basu

Although many fans would like the forward to remain with the organization for a few more seasons, Arpon Basu seems convinced that the management must take advantage of his high value to add a significant asset to the rebuilding process.
Earning a salary of only $1.985 million, the forward from Brampton, Ontario, is a complete player who excels both in offensive territory and in the defensive zone. In addition, he can provide a very interesting offensive contribution (13 points in 16 games), even while playing alongside Brendan Gallagher and Tanner Pearson.
And you, would you trade Sean Monahan for a first-round pick?
