Massive Trade Involving Jake Allen: a Canadiens Conference Rival is Officially in on the Stanley Cup Champion
The New Jersey Devils are not performing as expected this season, currently sitting at the 14th spot in the Eastern Conference, one point behind the Canadiens, with a record of 9-9-1. This is a stark contrast to last year when Lindy Ruff's team dominated the regular season with a record of 52-22-8.
One of the main reasons for this significant change in performance is undoubtedly the lack of stability in goal. Vitek Vaneck and Akira Schmid are not getting the job done at the moment. Both goalies even have save percentages below 0.900, which is a major issue for a team aiming for a championship.
During a recent appearance on the Sportsnet's Jeff Marek Radio Show, insider Elliotte Friedman discussed a new issue that seems to be growing for the Devils.
In relation to the goaltending situation, Friedman revealed that the New Jersey management had started calling teams for goaltending reinforcement.
"« I'm really curious to see what they do in goal here, I think they're looking around, I don't think there's anything imminent or anything, but I think they're calling teams to find out what the asking prices are on certain goalies. »
- Elliotte Friedman"
Considering the few teams that could meet the Devils' demand, a direct link is made to the Montreal Canadiens.
Just like the Edmonton Oilers, who are looking to fill a glaring need in goal, the Devils should be watched as potential trade partners for Kent Hughes.
As Friedman stated, it's more than likely that the Canadiens' GM has already discussed with his counterpart in New Jersey about one of his goaltenders.
In a situation where the CH wants to part with Jake Allen and the Devils have more salary cap flexibility than the Oilers, this is a matter that could gain momentum in the coming weeks.
