Crushing Update for Patrick Roy: a Return to the NHL Does Not Seem Imminent
There was movement in the NHL coaching ranks yesterday, as Dean Evason was fired by the Minnesota Wild.
Despite having a competitive roster, the team's performance has been very disappointing so far this season. After 19 games, the Wild had a record of 5-10-4.
Many fans were eagerly awaiting the announcement of Evason's replacement, especially because Patrick Roy is one of the potential candidates who might soon land a coaching position in the league, but that was not the case.
John Hynes, former head coach of the New Jersey Devils from 2015 to 2020 and of the Nashville Predators from 2019 to 2023, was ultimately chosen for the job.
What's surprising about Hynes's appointment is that he has never won anything in the NHL. In nearly 10 years behind a bench, he was eliminated four times before the playoffs, and once qualified, he lost four times in the first round or in the qualification round (during the COVID playoffs in 2020).
The NHL often recycles certain coaches without justifiable reason, and Hynes seems to be the new name who has nine lives in the NHL.
It's disappointing for candidates like Roy, who are seeking an opportunity and see another door closed by the Minnesota organization.
However, Ottawa remains a possibility, as the team is still at the bottom of the Eastern Conference after 17 games.
