As the NHL trade deadline approaches, Kent Hughes, General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens, will have to make several decisions regarding key players in the organization, such as Sean Monahan, Tanner Pearson, David Savard, and Jake Allen. It wouldn't be surprising to see some of these veterans leave the organization by March 8th, allowing the Canadiens to acquire new assets to continue their rebuilding process.
According to information disclosed by Darren Dreger, Sean Monahan may soon be on his way out. He mentioned that the Montreal Canadiens have a gentleman's agreement with the 29-year-old center, stating that he would be traded to a contending team or a team of his choice at the trade deadline.
"I wouldn't be surprised to see Monahan be one of the first forwards traded before the deadline.
You have to go back to the offseason when the Canadiens signed Sean Monahan. They had an agreement at that time that said he would be traded when the time came to a competitive team or a team of his choice, nothing has changed on that." - Darren Dreger
Furthermore, according to several observers, the Colorado Avalanche is one of the teams greatly interested in acquiring number 91. Adding a player who can play in the top 6, bringing offensive contribution and defensive reliability, could be very beneficial for Jared Bednar's team.
As highlighted by Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, the Canadiens and Avalanche already have a history of transactions, with the organization recently acquiring Justin Barron and Alex Newhook from Colorado. Given their past as trading partners, a potential transaction could be more easily completed.
"We know that Sean Monahan is expected to be traded within 2 months. We also know that Colorado is interested in acquiring him and they have a recent transaction history with the CH." - Marc-Olivier Beaudoin
Marc-Olivier Beaudoin made a trade proposal involving Monahan and Kovacevic that could be advantageous for both the Canadiens and the Avalanche. The proposal is as follows:
Montreal receives:
- A first-round pick in 2024
- A third-round pick in 2025
- Alex Beaucage
Colorado receives:
- Sean Monahan
- Johnathan Kovacevic
For Colorado, they would get a veteran with significant offensive potential who can play on both the power play and penalty kill. Johnathan Kovacevic would add interesting depth, potentially a valuable option in case of injuries.
For the Canadiens, the organization would acquire two very good draft picks and a former third-round pick in Alex Beaucage. The 22-year-old forward from Trois-Rivières has amassed 7 points in 20 games in the AHL this season.
If you were in Kent Hughes' place, would you accept this trade?
