The scuffle started when Bruins captain Brad Marchand was aggressively attacking the Flames' goalie. In response to Marchand's actions, Flames rookie forward Martin Pospisil intervened to defend his goaltender.
Pospisil charged in and delivered a powerful hit to Marchand, with his elbow coming up near Marchand's head. This action triggered a melee, with all players on the ice getting involved in the subsequent scuffle.
After some time, the teams were eventually separated and returned to the game. As of the first intermission, the Bruins were trailing 2-0.
