Although Sean Monahan's trade displeased many fans who wished the organization would extend his stay with the team, his departure coincides with a significant development for the future of the Canadiens.

Indeed, with the loss of the 29-year-old veteran, the team has significantly weakened for the remaining regular season games.
Martin St-Louis's squad is likely to lose far more games than it wins, suggesting that the Canadiens will improve their draft position for the next draft class.
The upcoming cohort is expected to have an absolutely incredible top-10, consisting of several forwards with elite potential, as well as numerous high-quality defenders.
The only issue for the Canadiens is that the organization absolutely needs to target a forward to address its lack of offensive talent, which limits the choices. Therefore, it's preferable to have the best possible ranking to draft better.
Currently, Kent Hughes holds the seventh-best selection for next June. There's a good chance that Minnesota and Ottawa, currently ranked 6th and 5th in the draft view, will surpass the Canadiens by the end of the season.
There will be very good choices among these draft positions, and one name in particular is attracting a lot of attention, that of Cayden Lindstrom.
Medicine Hat's head coach and GM Willie Desjardins compared him to an exceptional player who excites Canadiens fans.
"If I had to compare him to anyone, it would be Eric Lindros." Former Canucks and Los Angeles Kings coach Willie Desjardins made this shocking statement plainly, without changing his tone of voice, describing his gem Cayden Lindstrom, one of the headliners for the 2024 draft. – via TVA Sports

The 6-foot-4, 214-pound center, at 18 years old, embodies everything that NHL teams dream of: a big Western brute, mean, and extremely talented.
His coach, who has been behind the bench for two NHL teams previously, asserts:
"For a while, he led the league in penalty minutes. Guys with skills, you'll find plenty. Bigger guys too, but they're not as tough and mean as Cayden. It's been a long time since we've seen a guy like him."

In addition to being a very promising offensive player, with 46 points, including 27 goals in 32 games, Lindstrom also has that "sandpaper" side that makes him very special.

The Canadiens have their eye on Lindstrom

The young man revealed in an interview with TVA Sports some attention-grabbing information regarding the Canadiens. He disclosed that he had spoken with team scouts and even stated that he likes the Montreal market.
"I spoke a bit to the Canadiens' scouts," mentions Lindstrom. "It was good. They're good people. I know you have some pretty crazy fans in Montreal. I like that, and the organization has a rich history. The market doesn't intimidate me." - Cayden Lindstrom

This is very interesting for the future.
In fact, the CH would need a bit of luck to have the chance to select Lindstrom, as he is ranked between 3rd and 7th, according to most expert lists.
Therefore, Monahan's trade could indeed help the team in its quest to obtain the best possible draft position.
