Canadiens Announce They Have Released a Defenseman
According to a recent report by Anthony Marcotte, who is known for commentating on Laval Rocket games, Montreal Canadiens' General Manager Kent Hughes has released defenseman Nicolas Beaudin to represent Canada at the Spengler Cup.
Like the World Championship, this tournament will start on December 26 in Davos, Switzerland.
Marcotte notes that it's rare for NHL teams to release players under contract during the season to participate in a tournament like this.
"NHL teams don't often release guys they have under contract for this tournament unless they don't have a big role in the farm club. That's the case for Beaudin. He was there last year and it seems Hockey Canada liked him."
Beaudin, who participated in last year's edition, has accumulated 6 points in 13 games with Laval this season and is not a regular in the defensive lineup.
Currently, there's an excess of defensemen in the organization, both in Montreal and Laval, and this is a good way to give Beaudin important playtime without having to bench someone else.
This is a smart decision by Hughes, taking advantage of the opportunity.
