Oilers Reveal the Shocking Sweetener They'd Add to Trade Jack Campbell: it May Be Too Good to Pass Up for Kent Hughes
The Edmonton Oilers are slowly climbing up the standings after a disastrous start to the season. Superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have picked up their pace, but the team still faces a significant problem that hinders their progress despite recent victories: their goaltending situation.
Stuart Skinner hasn't been performing up to expectations, and Jack Campbell, with his $5 million contract, is languishing in the minors.
The organization needs to make a big move to address this issue. However, with only about $240,000 of cap space available, the Oilers need to shed Campbell's contract to free up the necessary space to acquire a respectable goaltender.
In a surprising development, the team's general manager, Ken Holland, has reportedly put a promising prospect in the mix to offload Campbell's contract. According to insider Darren Dreger of TSN, Edmonton is willing to include former first-round pick Philip Broberg in a deal to a team that would take on Jack Campbell's contract.
Now 22 years old, the Swedish defenseman was the 8th overall pick in the 2019 draft, the same year as Cole Caufield. Broberg has played 10 NHL games this season, accumulating four points in eight AHL games.
While he was once considered an excellent prospect, Broberg's development has been slower than expected. With Campbell signed for three more seasons, the young defenseman might not seem like the ideal asset to take on the veteran goalie's $5 million contract.
However, this will be a situation to watch closely in Edmonton.
