Disaster Confirmed in Washington: Alex Ovechkin Has Hit a Roadblock He May Never Overcome
In recent years, there has been much speculation about the possibility of witnessing a significant piece of history unfold before our eyes, with the prospect of Alexander Ovechkin surpassing Wayne Gretzky's almost unimaginable career goals record.
Before the start of the season, the Capitals' sharpshooter was "only" 72 goals away from Gretzky's legendary record of 894 goals held by the famous number 99. With three seasons to play under his current contract in Washington, this left Ovechkin with the possibility of achieving this feat by averaging 24 goals per year.
For a scorer as exceptional as him, who netted 42 goals last year, this seemed almost assured.
Unfortunately, after 28 games played this season, nothing is as certain. The Caps' number 8 appears to be far from his best level, having scored only five goals so far.
At this rate, he would only finish the season with a meager total of 15, which is remarkably low for a goal-scoring genius like him.
The captain of the Washington organization has not found the back of the net in his last 13 games, which is entirely surprising.
It's astonishing to note that Josh Anderson is only one goal behind Ovechkin's total, even though he has been criticized for his lethargy since the start of the season. This is quite remarkable, especially considering that the CH player does not have the same reputation as a scorer as the Capitals' star.
Are we finally witnessing the moment when age starts to catch up with Ovechkin, at 38 years old? Everything seems to indicate that he has reached a plateau and that the achievement of his record is seriously threatened.
