Gary Bettman and the NHL are closely monitoring the Maple Leafs, particularly concerning Chris Tanev's contract.

While extending contracts to reduce cap impact is a common practice, Bettman seems concerned about Tanev's recent signing by Toronto.
Jim Parsons of The Hockey News reports that the league might have reservations about the later years of this contract.
On July 1, Tanev, 34, signed a six-year, $27 million contract with the Maple Leafs.
Although he has been healthy recently, his injury history worries the league. Bettman fears that Toronto might use long-term injured reserve (LTIR) to circumvent the salary cap.
According to Eric Duhatschek of The Athletic, the league could use this contract as an example of cap circumvention if Tanev ends up on LTIR, even though the collective bargaining agreement does not prohibit it.
