Auston Matthews stuns Montreal media with statement on our fans
As is customary at the Bell Centre, Auston Matthews was booed excessively by the Canadiens' fans present. After the game, the star player made a significant statement about Montreal.
It must be stated right away, this treatment isn't reserved especially for Matthews; CH fans take wicked pleasure in booing all the star players.
Connor Bedard had his first experience of this during his visit to Montreal at the beginning of the season. Sidney Crosby is also a frequent recipient of this treatment when he comes to play at the home of the Canadiens.
In short, it has become normal for all players, but the boos against Matthews yesterday angered several journalists and Toronto fans. In their eyes, this gesture by the fans is a "lack of respect" towards the Leafs' number 34.
In connection with this situation, the main person involved, himself, is showing love to the CH supporters. His remarks even make everyone who was offended by the boos towards him look foolish.
"Auston Matthews, on his boos in Montreal tonight:
"Honestly, I think it's a sign of respect (from the Canadiens fans towards me), I believe, especially in a building like this and in a big hockey city with such passionate fans.
So, it doesn't bother me at all (smile). It doesn't bother me at all." - via journalist Mark Masters
Matthews is totally right on this point. If you get booed in Montreal, it's essentially a sign of recognition from the crowd.
It's funny to hear that a player appreciates receiving this treatment, and it's only in Montreal that this situation can occur.
