Steven Stamkos has represented the Tampa Bay Lightning since being selected first overall in the 2008 draft. However, this association may soon come to an end.
The star scorer will become a free agent on July 1st if he hasn't signed a new deal with the only NHL team he's played for.
Julien BriseBois is working to retain his captain's services in Tampa Bay, but the Lightning are constrained by the salary cap. Stamkos has just scored 40 goals and is expected to command a significant raise.
Renaud Lavoie has provided new information on the matter. Stamkos remains in the Lightning's plans, but...
"Julien BriseBois met with Steven Stamkos' agent yesterday but there is no assurance yet that he will return with @TBLightning next season."

Where there's smoke, there's fire, as they say. The Stamkos camp appears determined to secure a contract worthy of what he could command as a free agent.
Several teams will undoubtedly be interested. At 34 years old, the forward still has plenty of good hockey to offer an NHL franchise.
