Scandal Emerging in the NHL Due to Gary Bettman's Negligence
Things are not going well for the Ottawa Senators since the start of the season. In addition to ordinary performance after eight games, trailing in the last place of the Atlantic Division, the organization has faced two scandals in a few days.
On one hand, there was the story of Shane Pinto, who was handed a 41-game suspension due to a sports betting affair.
Yesterday, we learned that the NHL had severely punished the Senators for the fiasco of the aborted trade of Evgenii Dadonov. The league's top brass determined that the franchise will lose a first-round pick for one of the upcoming drafts, between 2024 and 2026.
This isn't the first time that the National League has punished an organization by removing a first-round pick in recent years. Let's also remember that in 2020, the Coyotes lost first and second-round picks for circumventing the NHL's recruitment rules.
In connection with all these penalties applied directly by Gary Bettman, a scandal erupted on social media. Several people have pointed out a major injustice on the part of the commissioner.
They refer to the story of Kyle Beach and the Chicago Blackhawks in 2021, which only led to a fine of 2 million dollars for covering up an internal sexual scandal.
For billionaires, 2 million dollars, especially for a wealthy franchise like the Hawks, is almost equivalent to a speeding fine. Many believe that this punishment is in no way equal to the acts committed by the organization.
Historically, the league has hindered two teams for reprehensible actions, certainly, but far less serious than what happened in Chicago. It really doesn't sit well with fans, even less so when taking into account that they got their hands on the next star of the league in Connor Bedard, when they should have lost their selection.
