Rutger McGroarty, a young talent from the Winnipeg Jets often linked to the Montreal Canadiens, has finally been traded.
Kent Hughes could have targeted McGroarty, especially before acquiring Patrik Laine, as the 20-year-old shows top-6 potential.
However, the cost to acquire McGroarty was high, much more than what was paid for Laine. The Pittsburgh Penguins offered Brayden Yager in exchange for McGroarty, which would have required a substantial offer from Montreal to be competitive.
According to Marco D'Amico, a comparable return for the Canadiens would have involved Joshua Roy or Michael Hage.
Such a transaction would have represented merely a lateral move for Montreal.
D'Amico believes that McGroarty is an excellent addition for Pittsburgh, but Kent Hughes likely made the right decision by not sacrificing Roy or Hage, two highly valued prospects by the Canadiens organization.
