Trade between the Canadiens and the Avalanche: Major decision by a prospect

Using a pick obtained from the Montreal Canadiens, the Colorado Avalanche drafted young defenseman Mikhail Gulyayev in 2023, and he refuses to play in the American Hockey League (AHL).

In a recent interview, Gulyayev, one of the Avalanche's top prospects, stated that he only wants to play in the National Hockey League (NHL).

"My path to the NHL is to come and play right away. I am pursuing my dream and nothing else interests me. I am not against the AHL; it is a good league, but if I go to America to play, I will only play in the NHL."

Gulyayev, currently under contract in the KHL until 2026, will probably not join North America before that date.

Both young talents represent strategic acquisitions for their respective teams.
