Now that Jake Allen has been traded to the New Jersey Devils, Martin St-Louis and the Montreal Canadiens find themselves in a more usual situation with only two goaltenders in front of the net, namely Samuel Montembeault and Cayden Primeau.

A scenario undoubtedly more advantageous for both goalkeepers, who will have the opportunity to get many more starts by the end of the campaign, but also in 2024-2025.
Knowing that the 27-year-old Quebecer will undoubtedly be the coach's trusted man, some observers stipulate that Cayden Primeau can, after five seasons within the organization, finally establish himself as a true NHL goalie.
It's worth mentioning that in his first game after Jake Allen's departure, Cayden Primeau was simply sensational, recording a 41-save shutout against the Columbus Blue Jackets. During his post-game interview with Marc Denis, he made a significant statement, indicating that this performance was just the beginning.

Could Cayden Primeau be relegated to the position of third goalie for the Canadiens again?

However, his spot alongside Samuel Montembeault may not be as guaranteed as some think. Indeed, as Mathis Therrien from the site DansLesCoulisses mentions, a prospect of the Canadiens could well surprise and carve out a spot with the big club as soon as next season.
The same sentiment is echoed by Renaud Lavoie, who believes that Jakub Dobes could shuffle the deck during the next training camp. In his first professional season, the fifth-round pick of 2020 is recently having excellent performances with the Laval Rocket. The former Ohio State University player is a 6-foot-5 giant who has all the qualities necessary to become an NHL-caliber goaltender.
"Why come to such a conclusion? One must look at Jakub Dobes' performances with the Rocket over the past few weeks.

In his last 23 games (before last night), he has a record of 13-6-3 with a .920% save percentage. It's clear he becomes an option as a backup to Samuel Montembeault next season." - Renaud Lavoie

Wow!
Could we witness another three-goalie situation next season? The probabilities are rather slim given that the Laval Rocket would be without a true number one, but if Jacob Fowler decides to make his debut in the professional ranks, such a scenario could potentially materialize.
