Serge Savard is a towering figure in the history of the Montreal Canadiens. After a stellar playing career, he went on to be a successful general manager, leading the team to two championships.
At 78 years old, Mr. Savard has never been shy about sharing his opinions. He remains active and recently hosted another successful edition of his golf tournament.
In a media briefing about his event, he also shared his thoughts on the future and performance of the Montreal Canadiens.
First, he expressed concerns about a specific aspect of the team:
"If I have one concern about the Canadiens, it's that over the years, you'll need to be both good and big. That's what Florida was this year. We might be heading in that direction, but for now, the size is a bit small."
Serge Savard was not impressed with Cole Caufield's performance last season. According to him, Caufield has slowed down since his NHL debut:
"I found him less dangerous. There are explanations, he had surgery, and I find there's less space on the ice. As soon as the puck is in the corner, there are five players... it's like a rugby game! A guy like Caufield needs to create space on the power play."
These remarks are not very encouraging for the future of the Canadiens' rebuilding efforts. Serge Savard does not mince words in expressing his views, whether you agree or not.
