One of Marc Bergevin's Worst Mistakes Continues to Haunt the Habs
Every summer, NHL general managers face major decisions that will play a significant role in the future of their organization. Therefore, we're talking about the draft which, year after year, allows each team to add talented young prospects to their lineup.
Obviously, drafting is an inexact science. It's much easier to analyze the various selections a few seasons later, once the drafted players have officially made their debut in the Bettman circuit.
Moreover, looking at the selections made by the previous management, under Marc Bergevin's era, one controversial decision particularly catches our attention. Indeed, during the 2015 draft, several Quebec journalists strongly recommended that the Canadiens select Quebecois forward Nicolas Roy.
Unfortunately, the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge decided to pick Lukas Vejdemo at 87th overall, thus allowing the Carolina Hurricanes to snag the Saguenéens de Chicoutimi forward early in the third round (96th overall choice).
It is remembered that the Montreal management was strongly criticized for this selection, especially since Nicolas Roy amassed 170 points (84 goals and 86 assists) in 116 games during his last two seasons in the QMJHL.
Nothing to help, the Swedish prospect Lukas Vejdemo played a total of only 13 games with the Montreal Canadiens (2 points), while Nicolas Roy quickly became an important player in the NHL. Moreover, the center from Amos is currently on an extraordinary streak, having accumulated 14 points in his last 10 games.
There's no doubt that the 27-year-old forward would become a genuinely interesting option to fill the center position on the third or fourth line, having tallied 10 goals and 19 assists (29 points) in 44 games with the Vegas Golden Knights this season.
One could bet that Marc Bergevin deeply regrets his decision to overlook a player as versatile as Nicolas Roy. The 6'4" forward has played more than 270 games in the NHL, notably recording 123 points.
Do you think Kent Hughes should attempt to complete a trade to bring the Quebecois back to the Canadiens?
