Kent Hughes doesn't have the same luck as Barry Trotz
Barry Trotz, general manager of the Nashville Predators, acknowledges that NHL teams located in states without income tax have an advantage.
During an interview with TSN, he explained that this advantage allows players' money to go further.
Trotz, GM of the Predators since July 1, 2023, however, clarified that taxation is not the sole factor attracting players like Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault.
According to him, these players are drawn to teams serious about their quest for victory. Trotz also mentioned that the fiscal impact is most keenly felt among second or third-tier players.
Since the NHL instituted the salary cap after the 2004-2005 lockout, all teams have operated under the same cap, regardless of local taxation.
No Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup since 1993, while Florida teams have reached the finals five times in five years.
