The Montreal Canadiens have focused on the draft in recent years and have discovered several promising young talents.

However, with the large number of players the team has drafted, they cannot sign all of them. Therefore, some tough decisions have to be made.
This week, it was announced that Rhett Pitlick, a fifth-round pick from 2019, will not receive an offer and will become an unrestricted free agent.
Marc Dumont from Montreal Hockey Now also reveals that forward Ty Smilanic is expected to face the same fate.
Smilanic played for the Trois-Rivières Lions last year. Despite his potential to at least establish himself in the AHL, the organization was not impressed with his performance.
While this may not be a significant loss, it is the kind of decision management must make to ensure they have available contracts to offer to prospects who truly have a chance to eventually play with the main team.
«The Montreal Canadiens have relinquished the rights to Rhett Pitlick, and they will likely do the same for Ty Smilanic.

It's a harsh reality, but it could become much more common in the future. The Canadiens are overflowing with quality prospects.»
