During a recent appearance on Frank Seravalli's podcast, the General Manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, answered several very interesting questions about his team.

However, it was one of his last statements that caught attention, as he mentioned that there might be a player better than Nick Suzuki in the Canadiens' lineup.
According to the club's GM, if we go back to last fall, it wasn't the captain who was the standout player, but rather Kirby Dach. In the eyes of the CH management, he was the best player on the team at that time.
"Kirby Dach was the best player at camp, in our opinion." – Kent Hughes

It's remembered that during the last training camp, and even during the first game of the season in Toronto, Dach and Juraj Slafkovsky had developed solid chemistry that suggested a huge breakthrough was coming for the two players.
Dach even scored two points against the Maple Leafs.
Unfortunately, after only four periods of play, number 77 was injured for the remainder of the schedule, leaving Slafkovsky hanging for several weeks, before he finally joined the first trio in December.
The biggest question at the moment is whether Dach can pick up where he left off last October, because missing a full season in a crucial developmental year like this one, at the age of 23, is quite concerning.
Whether Dach becomes better than Suzuki or not, it must be said that if both center players reach the level expected of them, it could be said that the Canadiens would be totally in business for the future.
Simply with the return of a healthy Dach, if he can play almost a full season next year, it will be a significant addition to Martin St-Louis' lineup.
The prospect of battling for a playoff spot as early as next season becomes much more plausible if the 2019 third overall pick pilots the Canadiens' second line.
