Kent Hughes and another general manager were both very interested in acquiring Patrik Laine, hoping to revive his career.

The Flyers seemed like potential contenders, but according to several sources, it was actually the Minnesota Wild that were heavily involved in the pursuit.
Bill Guerin made several trade offers to the Blue Jackets in an attempt to bring Laine to Minnesota.
However, the Wild's financial situation and salary cap constraints complicated things. Guerin didn't have as much flexibility as Kent Hughes.
It was also revealed that the Blue Jackets were unwilling to retain any portion of Patrik Laine's hefty contract.
This was one of the key reasons why Kent Hughes was ultimately able to finalize the deal with Don Waddell.
