A promising prospect from the Canadiens stuck in the KHL for his entire career?
The Montreal Canadiens could be giving up on an intriguing prospect in their organization. It wouldn't be surprising to see him stay in the KHL for his entire career.
Bogdan Konyushkov was a 4th-round pick, 110th overall, in the NHL's 2023 draft. Despite his young age, he's establishing himself well in the KHL and emerging as a leader for his team.
At just 21 years old, he's been named captain of the Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo. He's heavily relied upon by his coaches.
It's quite rare to see a 21-year-old defenseman wearing the 'C' on his jersey in the KHL.
According to multiple reports, Bogdan Konyushkov could very well remain in Russia for much of his career. The Canadiens' prospect is already under contract until 2026, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him sign an extension.
If that happens, Konyushkov's presence in North America could practically be forgotten. Should he not get a real chance to crack the main roster in Montreal, he may choose to pursue a career in the KHL.
Given the future of Montreal's blue line, this scenario could unfold. His situation could resemble that of former defenseman Alexei Emelin, who was drafted in 2004 but didn't debut with the Canadiens until 2011.
«Personally, I think it will be much harder to bring Bogdan Konyushkov to North America than Ivan Demidov. Konyushkov is already a captain in the KHL and has a much longer contract (until May 31, 2026). Demidov just needs to play the season.»

We'll see how things unfold, but this scenario seems likely...
