Two Habs Players to Adopt Neck Guards in Honour of Adam Johnson
It's sad to see that it often takes a tragic incident to bring about change and shift mindsets. Hockey players are no exception. Unfortunately, this time, the incident resulted in the tragic death of Adam Johnson. In the aftermath of this tragedy, several Montreal Canadiens players are now contemplating the significance of wearing a neck guard that could potentially save their lives.
The neck guard isn't the most attractive or comfortable piece of equipment. You don't see major suppliers like CCM or BAUER endorsing big advertisements with stars like McDavid or Crosby to promote neck guards that could shield players from a skate blade to the throat. To be clear, I'm not pointing fingers at manufacturers or players, it's merely an observation. However, there's work to be done in making this protective gear more comfortable and effective.
Anyone who's played hockey, even a little bit, would agree that the neck guard is quite basic and rather uncomfortable. Now imagine being a professional hockey player and needing to wear it daily.
Rasmus Dahlin of the Buffalo Sabres didn't hesitate and wore the neck guard against the Flyers following the incident. Many Canadiens players are pondering over the use of neck guards. Raphaël Harvey-Pinard and Jordan Harris have voiced their concerns regarding the protection and all kinds of cuts.
"It certainly makes you think about the future. The guys are questioning it. We haven't discussed the neck guard as a team yet, but I've seen that AHL players are starting to wear them. It might help, but it's uncertain if a neck guard could've prevented such an accident." - Raphaël Harvey-Pinard
"It's worth giving it some serious thought. I'm not sure what the outcome will be, though. I believe it's more of a personal decision. For instance, not everyone wears a mouthguard. Everyone should, but that's not the reality. However, they're available for those who want them.
It's got me thinking, and I've seen that wrist guards are also being tested in the AHL. It might lead to changes in the neck guard, but we're seeing more players getting cut on their arms and wrists." - Jordan Harris
Are we witnessing a repeat of the visor's adoption process? Years ago, the visor faced similar scrutiny, and now every player wears one. Let's hope no one has to pay with their life while playing a sport. Whether you're a professional or an amateur, the game should never cost you your life.
My deepest condolences to Adam Johnson's family and loved ones.
