In recent days, Samuel Montembeault himself confirmed to Arpon Basu that his agent, Paul Corbeil, had begun discussions with the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens, Kent Hughes, regarding a possible contract extension. It's worth noting that the Quebec-born goaltender will become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career this summer, but he wishes to stay with the Montreal organization.

Moreover, during Saturday night's game against the Boston Bruins, Elliotte Friedman mentioned that negotiations were going very well between the two parties. He also stated in his podcast "32 Thoughts" that the Canadiens' management wanted to wait until a new deal was signed with Samuel Montembeault before potentially trading Jake Allen or Cayden Primeau.
Given that the general manager of the Canadiens, Kent Hughes, wants to resolve the goalie situation soon, it would not be surprising if the 27-year-old goaltender signs a contract extension very soon. On this topic, Tony Marinaro made a significant statement on BPM Sports about Montembeault's next contract.
Georges Laraque stated:
He becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer, so he knows very well that if the Canadiens do not give him what he wants, he will be able to find a taker elsewhere. [...] His agent will not ask for less than four million dollars per season."

Tony Marinaro added a
"For me, he will get more than Jake Allen's contract (3.85 million). If the Canadiens give him a new deal and make him their number one goalie, he will earn more than Jake Allen, for sure."

Tony Marinaro and Georges Laraque seem convinced that number 35 will earn an annual salary of at least 4 million dollars in his next deal.
Although Samuel Montembeault has had some good moments since the start of the season, currently showing a save percentage of 0.905 and a goals-against average of 2.89, he has not yet convinced Martin St-Louis that he deserved the number one goaltender position with the Canadiens this year.
This is a rather high amount for a goaltender who may never be indisputably a starter in the NHL. It should be noted that some leading goaltenders such as Jake Oettinger, Ilya Sorokin, and Vitek Vanecek all have contracts of four million or less at the moment.
The question arises: Does Samuel Montembeault deserve a contract extension worth four million dollars per season?
